1. Product Introduction
Marsh Snail, Marsh Snail Oil, Olgengi Oil, Godi Oil, Saonde

What is Marsh Snail Oil 1000?

Marsh Snail Oil is created by removing sediment, impurities, washing, and drying marsh snails, then placing them into breathable traditional pottery jars and heating them continuously at a high temperature of 360°C or higher for 72 hours to completely dissolve the snail meat. Therefore, Marsh Snail Oil contains both the meat and parts of the shell that were inside the marsh snail. "Sediment removal" refers to the process of extracting impurities from within the snail shell. The "1000" in Marsh Snail Oil 1000 indicates that the ceramic bottle contains 1000ml of marsh snail oil.

Due to the name "Marsh Snail Oil," you might think it refers to the oil contained within the snail. Marsh Snail Oil is not an oil (fat/lipid) like sesame oil or perilla oil. The "oil" in the name is simply used to signify that the nutrients within the marsh snail have been completely extracted; in reality, the primary component of Marsh Snail Oil is amino acids, which make up the snail meat. You will discover the true value of Marsh Snail Oil after consuming one 1,000ml bottle, which is a 20-day supply at 50ml per day.

The manufacturer, Yeongwol Pyeongchang Marsh Snail, produces its products under Ministry of Food and Drug Safety HACCP certification, and we take pride in producing Marsh Snail Oil in a safer and more hygienic manner. Here is a brief introduction to the raw material, the marsh snail.

Marsh Snail

Marsh snails are called by various names depending on the region, such as Olgengi, freshwater marsh snail, freshwater conch, conch, Doseulbi, Godi, Godong, freshwater conch, whelk, Daesari, Kkolpaengi, and Golbaengi. Because they were a familiar food source for our ancestors, there are many regional dialects for them. Marsh snails inhabit most rivers and streams except in the far north of the Korean Peninsula.

Marsh snails are distributed in Korea, Japan (south of Hokkaido), Taiwan, and China, and are mollusks living in rivers, lakes, streams, and ponds. The Chinese character name is Wara (蝸螺), a term composed of the character for snail (蝸) and the character for conch (螺). In Korea, they are called Wara, in Japan they are called Senken (川蜷), and in China they are called Danguquan (短溝蜷).

There are 9 species across 3 genera of marsh snails in Korea: the common marsh snail, the true marsh snail, the wrinkled marsh snail, the small-wrinkled marsh snail, the bead marsh snail, the banded bead marsh snail, the rosary marsh snail, the Ghotche marsh snail, and the pouch marsh snail. North Chungcheong Province in Korea is a region known for marsh snails, where Olgengi Hangover Soup is famous. The Donggang River in Yeongwol is home to many rosary marsh snails and bead marsh snails.

Marsh Snail Farming

In December 2010, the world's first successful marsh snail farming was achieved in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province. However, it is still too early to mass-produce marsh snails through farming for the food industry. Although the National Institute of Fisheries Science succeeded in farming them using compound feed in Yesan, industrialization is difficult due to the issue of feed costs.

Humans still do not fully understand the ecology of marsh snails. Currently, small-scale farming is being attempted in about 15 locations across Korea, using a method of hatching snails in farms, raising them to juveniles, and then releasing them into streams to grow into larger snails. Even this method is said to be quite difficult.

Korea's demand for marsh snails is about 6,000–7,000 tons per year for consumption in large cities, but domestic production is only about 2,000–3,000 tons, requiring the remainder to be imported. It goes without saying that the imported ones are also wild-caught, as they cannot be farmed in other countries either.

Why Marsh Snails are Famous

The reason marsh snails became famous is because of the folk medicine practitioner Insan Kim Il-hoon, who lived in Hamyang, Gyeongsangnam-do. During his lifetime, Insan was the developer of Insan Bamboo Salt, which is made by putting salt into bamboo and roasting it nine times.

Insan is famous for helping many people by processing common animals and plants found around us using unique methods. His descendants and enthusiasts of folk medicine have currently established the Insan Oriental Medicine Clinic, Insan Bamboo Salt Co., Ltd., and the Insan Philosophy Association to carry on his legacy.

Insan dealt with marsh snails based on the energy inherent in the colors of objects. Just as he developed Insan Bamboo Salt by utilizing the white energy of salt (white) and the red fire energy of high temperatures (fire), he created Marsh Snail Oil by utilizing the blue energy of snail meat (blue) and the red fire energy of high temperatures (fire). Below is the appearance of the blue-energized marsh snail meat.

Composition of Marsh Snails

Below is the general composition table for marsh snail meat. "Dry matter basis" means that the content ratio was calculated excluding moisture.

General Composition Table of Marsh Snail Meat (Dry matter basis)

Component Protein Lipid Carbohydrate Ash
Sugar Fiber
Content (%) 60.7 7.1 17.9 0 14.3

The analysis results above are for marsh snail meat, not for Marsh Snail Oil. Since Marsh Snail Oil is made by dissolving snail meat, we can generally understand the components of the oil by looking at the meat. Let's briefly examine the general components of marsh snail meat.

1). Marsh snails are very rich in protein.

Marsh snail meat is a protein-rich food with a higher protein content than beef and approaching that of deer antler (velvet antler). There are 16 known types of amino acids that make up the protein in marsh snails.

2). Marsh snails contain lipids.

Considering that marsh snails are animals, the amount of lipids is not particularly high. They are composed of high-quality fatty acids, including many essential fatty acids.

3). Even though they are animals, not plants, marsh snails are uniquely very rich in carbohydrates.
4). Marsh snails are rich in minerals despite not having bones in their meat.

Ash is the residue remaining after burning marsh snail meat with fire, as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins decompose and disappear. Only inorganic minerals remain in the ash.

Marsh snail meat is particularly rich in calcium and iron among mineral types. Because of the high mineral content, there is a strong bitter taste at the edge of the snail meat.

5). Marsh snails are rich in taurine.

Taurine is the component that made marsh snail hangover soup famous nationwide.

6). Marsh snails are rich in chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll is the cause of the blue color of the meat. This is because marsh snails eat green algae that live in Grade 1 clear water.

The characteristic of general marsh snail components is that they are high in protein and rich in a well-balanced variety of nutrients.

Differences between Marsh Snail Oil and Marsh Snail Concentrate

The most famous marsh snail processed products are Marsh Snail Oil and Marsh Snail Concentrate. Marsh Snail Concentrate is also called marsh snail juice or extract. Here is a brief introduction to the differences between these two products.

Marsh Snail Oil Marsh Snail Oil is obtained by continuously heating crushed marsh snails at a high temperature of over 360 degrees (°C) for 72 hours. Therefore, Marsh Snail Oil can contain not only marsh snail meat but also some components of the inner shell. The amount of raw marsh snails used to produce 1 liter of oil is 15kg. One liter provides a 20-day supply.
Marsh Snail Concentrate Freshwater snail concentrate is obtained by simmering crushed freshwater snails with water in a cauldron at 100°C for 12 hours. Therefore, this concentrate is an extract made by dissolving only the flesh of the freshwater snails. The amount of raw freshwater snails used to produce the concentrate is 10kg per 60 pouches. These 60 pouches are intended for a one-month supply.

Method of Manufacturing Freshwater Snail Oil

Here is a brief introduction to the freshwater snail oil production process.

1). Clean the raw freshwater snails to remove sediment and impurities, then dry them.
2). Place the snails in a clay jar and seal the opening with cloth.
3). Bury an empty jar in the ground.
4). Place the jar containing the snails over the mouth of the jar buried in the ground.
5). Wrap straw rope around the jar containing the snails and cover it with clay.
6). Heat the jar with the snails for 3 days using rice husk fire/gas fire.
7). Collect the oil that has melted down from the upper jar into the lower jar.

Method of Manufacturing Freshwater Snail Concentrate

Here is a brief introduction to the freshwater snail concentrate production process.

1). Clean the raw freshwater snails to remove sediment and impurities, then dry them.
2). Grind the dried freshwater snails.
3). Put the ground freshwater snails into a cast-iron pot.
4). Pour water into the pot and simmer for 12 hours.
5). Refine the concentrated freshwater snail extract and pack it into vacuum pouches.
2. Product Features
1). Uses natural freshwater snails harvested from the Donggang River, an upper tributary of the Namhan River (in the Yeongwol and Pyeongchang regions), famous for its clear water.
2). Manufactured by combining the traditional earthenware jar extraction method with modern gas-fired heating.
3). Because of continuous 72-hour heating using indoor gas, there is little variation in the taste of the freshwater snail oil. The taste is always consistent.
4). Since the snail flesh is extracted using a high-temperature heating method, the taste and aroma of the oil are not unusual. Anyone can consume it without difficulty.
5). To prevent quality changes during delivery, items are shipped in an ice box containing ice packs.
6). We are covered by product liability insurance, so you can receive compensation in case of any damage caused by the freshwater snail oil.
7). HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certified, ensuring our freshwater snail oil is more hygienic and safer to consume.
